Why do a lot of people use religion/church as/for a comfort blanket?
Thank you for not using “alot.” A lot is correct, alot is not.
In a way this has nothing to do with is God real or not. If God is real, an Atheist will receive no comfort from any religion or church and arguably, none from God. If God is not real, a believer will still receive comfort from believing and acting on that belief. An individual may get some comfort from picturing a parent there by their side and talking to them even if the parent has passed on. Some perfectly normal and completely sane people do things such as that. But if God is real, then a believer has a source of comfort to rely on that is not available to and not believed by the non-believer. And if God is real, then at least potentially the comfort one can receive from one’s faith has a depth beyond what is available elsewhere.
Many Atheists claim “there is no evidence for god. None at all.” In my view, intellectually that is an extremely weak position and maybe even a very dishonest one. The fact is there is a considerable body of evidence regarding the existence of God. Some of it for, some against and some could be argued by either side. While some people claim they receive a great deal of both strength and comfort from God, more than they find anywhere else, that is not proof of God, except for maybe the believer. But weak, strong or in between, it is evidence for the existence of God. And no matter where you get your comfort, talking to a dead relative, talking to a brick wall, looking up from the bottom of a bottle of vodka, in the arms of your spouse or a close friend, wrapping up by yourself in a lamb’s wool comforter or praying to God, if that is where you get your comfort then when you need comfort that is where you will be found.
